Considered to be one of the oldest cheese producers in the Department of the North, the cheese business of the Abbaye du Mont des Cats is an independent regional company which has been established since 1870 in the Monts de Flandre. Since 1970, the cheese making business has been the sole source of income for the community of Trappist monks in the Abbey, which was founded in 1826.
The milk is collected from the farms of the Monts de Flandre, and all of the processing work is carried out by the monks of the Abbey.
The products made at the Abbaye du Mont des Cats includes cheese and butter.
After major conversion work, the cheese making site has obtained European approval, and the products of the Abbey are included in the list of culinary heritage of the Nord - Pas-de-Calais region.
