"Abbaye de Belval" cheeses are the fruit of a combination of different influences including master cheese makers, the region and the monastic origins of the cheeses. These quality cheeses are matured in the cellars of the abbey by Trappist sisters who take a great deal of care over their work. In addition to the traditional "plain" cheese, the sisters have developed a Trappist "beer matured" cheese. Delicious! The range of cheeses also extends to hard cheeses, and all of these should be discovered and tasted. The cheese making business is where the religious community has worked and earned its living ever since it was set up in the Ternois area in 1893. Monastic life here is a mixture of prayer, fraternity and work. The result of all of this is over a hundred years' experience and know-how, patiently developed and passed down from generation to generation.
